Sometimes the most important job for hydrogen isn’t the biggest or the flashiest. It’s showing up exactly when someone needs it the most, with no grid, no fuel truck, and no tank required.

Before we dive in, here’s a quick update on our progress in our mission to produce the world’s cheapest clean hydrogen. Our ThermoLoop® engineering test unit is under construction, and we’re working with NuCube Energy to evaluate using heat from their next-generation nuclear reactor to power ThermoLoop®. First up, China launched its largest hydrogen-powered inland cargo ship, the Yungtown Number One, serving the Pearl River region. This one’s worth noting because it isn’t a demonstrator. At 70 meters and rated to carry up to 140 containers, it’s sized and built for actual freight service.
Inland cargo shipping is yet another great example of an application where hydrogen makes perfect sense: fixed schedules and return-to-base refueling in a place where polluting technology hasn’t changed much in decades. A vessel this size doing the proving tells you the economics make sense.
Next, in the last few weeks, UBS upgraded FuelCell Energy to Buy on their new data center power deals. ECL and PowerCell lined up over 300 megawatts of hydrogen power for AI data centers backed by Bosch. Air Liquide put more than $160 million into a new hydrogen plant in Arizona built to supply chipmakers.
And the IEA’s Global Hydrogen Review shows a major shift in clean energy markets. Investment in electrolysis has officially overtaken hydrogen paired with carbon capture for the first time, capturing nearly 70% of the rapidly growing capital flowing into low-emissions production.
This trend signals that data centers, chipmakers, and utilities are willing to commit substantial capital to clean hydrogen ecosystems. However, while fuel cells and offtake agreements manage local power delivery, they don’t lower the fundamental cost of producing the hydrogen itself. And that remains the primary economic hurdle the industry has yet to clear.
Last story for today: a cooking stove that generates its own hydrogen out of water is now headed into disaster zones across Malaysia, Indonesia, and the rest of Southeast Asia.
Kinetic 7’s Nomad and Tribe stoves don’t store any hydrogen gas at all. You pour in any fresh water you’ve got, and the unit splits it into hydrogen on demand, powered by a battery you can recharge with a solar panel or a microgrid. No tank, no pressure vessel, nothing sitting around waiting to leak.
Kinetic 7 is also building a modular shipping-container version that can cook for large numbers of displaced people in places where the kitchen is gone. It’s a small device working a real problem.
After an earthquake or a flood, clean cooking fuel is one of the first things to disappear. And this doesn’t need the grid or a fuel truck to work.
A cargo ship, a wave of new capital, and a cooking stove that runs on nothing but water all point to the same conclusion: demand for clean hydrogen is real and growing in every imaginable application.
But none of it scales without cheap, clean hydrogen. That’s exactly what our patent-pending ThermoLoop® technology is being built to deliver.
